analyses of conventions.

Shot types

The device I am going to discuss is, Shot types variety. An example of a shot type used in summer heights high is; while the interviewer is asking the students about life at summer heights high, the shot used is a long shot, which is used so the audience can see all the students’ body, which if important because we can see their body language when their around each other, and when we see their body language e can tell that the boys are very comfortable with their friends & also in the long shot we can see their surroundings, which is in school. Another shot that was used is mid shot which focuses on one person’s face while their talking, so we get to know the characters more. Also in the tribe they use the same type of camera angles, summer heights high is using the same shot types as the tribe, because mockumentarys are supposed to look like a real documentary, although because of what the tribe is about, they need to use close up shots so the audience can focus of the detail of the bees.

quality of footage

Another devise I am going to talk about Is quality of footage, there is a HUGE difference in quality between summer heights high and the tribe, in the tribe the type of footage used is HD and looks very professional compared to the type of footage used in summer heights high, but the type of footage used was made to look unprofessional & the camera was a bit bumpy/ not straight which give the effect that it wasn’t planned. This tribe is in HD so you can tell that is has a high production value and it could’ve cost more money make sure the footage was perfect, however for the footage of summer highs high it has a lower production value, it is just normal budget quality. The reason why the documentary and the mockumentary have a different production values is because  years ago, when documentary’s wasn’t as popular their production value was also very low, so the mockumentarys are taking the mick of when documentary’s wasn’t as popular as they are now. Also another reason why their production value is lower  is because is the footage was in HD it would looked planner, and the whole point of the show is so that is doesn’t look planned

interview and narrator

The next device I am going to discuss is interview and narrator. In summer heights high we can hear the school children playing in background to give the effect that the interview were taken in a real school. Also we can’t hear the interviewer asking the question this is because when Jonah answers the question he is looking straight at the camera (audience) this is used so we feel a connection with Jonah whereas if we were to hear the interviewer asking the questions that connection that we feel would not be there, & also when he speaks he speaks informally, this makes us feel  a part of his group, but if we was someone that he doesn’t know Jonah would speak in a more formal language. But In the transcribed dialogue of the tribe, the things we can hear are, Bruce parry asking questions to the man who is collecting the honey from the tree when Bruce asks the questions he uses pauses and filters, it shows that he is thinking about the right questions to ask.

Observational shot

The fourth device I am going to explain is Observational shot, the type of shots used in the tribe is the “over the shoulder shot” this it used to make us feel a part of his team, this is also used to make the audience feel safe and protected by Bruce as he is standing between us and danger this makes the audience think he is very brave. On the other hand, the shot used in summer heights high is as if we are spying on the conversation between Jonah and his gang the head teacher this makes the audience feel like Jonah ( a naughty school child) this also makes us feel special  as it is something that no one would usually see .

Voice overs

The fifth device I am going to explore is voice overs, in summer heights high the language used is informal slang, & looks un planned for example “like some”  “and stuff” shows that he feels that we are part of his “gang”/friend, whereas if he thought we (the audience) were just strangers, they would probably use more formal language. But in “the tribe” the narrator uses formal and descriptive word, which show that the target audience is more inelegant and maybe a bit older than those who watch the mockumentary, the point of having a narrator talking in the background is to give the audience more information.
